Minimising Waste

All glass is separately collected from the kerb in a green bin and sorted by colour by the driver into the purpose made bins on the side of the truck. All other recyclables are in the yellow and green wheelie bin. This way broken glass doesn’t contaminate paper. Matamata-Piako are moving next year to a 'Buy as You Need' system for rubbish bags, rather than supplying 52 bags per property regardless of need, as part of rates. All recycling is sorted at our state of the art Materials Recovery Facility that we share with our two neighbouring councils, Thames-Coromandel and Hauraki.

You can  also deliver recyclables to the drop off points (Transfer Stations) located across the District

Water use, and avoiding pollution

The Council operates seven water supply schemes in the district:

  • Three larger supplies for Matamata (including Waharoa), Morrinsville and Te Aroha
  • Four small schemes in Te Poi, Tahuna, Hinuera and Te Aroha West.

Each one has at least one treatment plant, and the district has a total of 325 kilometres of pipes. We are currently looking at options to supply fully treated water to Te Aroha West, until then a permandent boil water notice is in place for this supply.
