Gardens and backyards

A new Hutt City gardening group is Awakairangi Garden Blitz , where people come together to build vege gardens in their own and fellow community member’s back yards. The group is open to anyone and everyone, from novices who have never picked up a shovel to experienced gardeners as well as people of all ages and levels of physical ability and is based on the principle of reciprocity: if you help out in at least two blitzes then you will be eligible to have a garden built from scratch at your place!  Awakairangi Garden Blitz is a group where people get dirty, do physical activity, socialise, share food and knowledge about growing food and improve their communities one garden at a time!   email gareth.west@huttcity.govt.nz to get involved.

Lower Hutt has community gardens in the following areas:

  • Moera (behind the community house)
  • Roberts Street Reserve, Avalon 022 0682114.
